Each month we conduct a beach and dive site clean-up around Lošinj. The beach clean-up is usually held on the beach in Čikat. The site for the underwater clean-up changes every month.
The goal of the monthly clean-ups is to protect our underwater world from structural damage and improve the appearance of our beaches and dive sites. Non-divers can help out be walking the shore and cleaning up rubbish and divers can bring up the debris which has made it into the water. We can all enjoy a bar-b-que, drinks and (hopefully) a beautiful day on the waterfront!
When tourists and locals were asked in a recent survey what they thought to be the biggest environmental problem on Lošinj, the majority (29%) said that rubbish/no recycling was the biggest problem. The source of the large items, metals, and electrical appliances seems to be from the boats docked around the island’s bays, as most items were found under the boats. Plastics, foam, and nets could be both locally produced and drifted in from the surrounding areas as these items flow with the currents.
Do your part by picking up rubbish you find and refusing plastic bags and foam with your purchases; instead bring your own bag or reusable containers. If we all do our part we can beautify and protect the island we love and depend on.
So please grab your dive buddies and non-diving friends and family and join us for a great day Diving Against Debris!
